| The town was founded on the remains of the Roman settlement Civitas - Negotiana at the crossroads to today’s Maribor, Celje and Ptuj. The place was walled in around 1300. It was awarded the city rights in the beginning of the 13th century. I was strongly damaged during Turkish raids; it was also hit by three conflagrations which always burnt it to ashes. A remarkable development was brought by the road between Vienna and Triest. Then the majority of town buildings were erected. Slovenska Bistrica is situated at the height of 274 metres above sea level, and has near 6800 inhabitants. It is the south-east part of Pohorje administrative and industrial centre, and the area between Pohorje and Haloze centre. |
